As a provider for many years, I have seen the changing childcare environment first hand. There are many children who now attend childcare on a daily basis, while 20 odd years ago, more children seemed to be at home with at least one parent or grandparent.
I became a provider during the time when childcare was still just an option, and not necessarily the norm. When I had my own children, I wanted to be home with them as much as possible, so like many other mothers, I started taking care of children in my home as a way to make an income. My "family childcare" business grew from there.
Now many years later, with much more experience with children, I still provide the same style of care that I wanted for my own children and still take pride in today. A "family" style childcare with the emphasis on being a FAMILY and not just a place for children to be dropped off for the day before graduating to school.
Family childcare is a nurturing place where children can count on the same relationships each day. The turnover in staff is nonexistent, as the providers are the same every day. The turnover in children is also minimal because the children who are part of the childcare family, usually stay for years and become very close to each other and are similar to siblings.
The children in family childcare, eat together, nap together, get potty trained together, fight with each other, learn to love and share with each other and do all the things children in families do.
This is a very healthy way to grow and learn as can be seen in every family in most species on our big planet.
Many parents nowadays are unfamiliar with family childcare and believe that their only options are center/facility based care for their babies and toddlers. Yet the family childcare is by far the best option for creating loving friendships and close, bonding relationships. A "must have" for healthy children at all times.
So when looking for childcare, consider looking into "family childcare" for your child. Check out the many home childcare's that are still available. Take the time to interview with very experienced providers, who have dedicated their lives to being professional care givers to children who need childcare each day. You may decide that your little one would benefit by being in a childcare "family", instead of spending each day in center care that closely resembles a classroom at a school with changing (and sometimes unqualified) staff. Family childcare is not for everyone, yet is still an option for children.
Most family childcare is provided in a loving environment, inside a comfortable home.
If they could say, I think most babies and small children would prefer being part of a family, and not just another pupil to make a group size in a classroom setting. Wouldn't you?
